Shopping tip

When buying bread, check the label for fat content and additives. Preservative 282 has been widely used in bread in Australia since the 1990s. 282 can result in food intolerance reactions, such as migraines, irritable bowel, restlessness and inattention. The Food Intolerance Network of Australia points out that like all additives, this preservative was not tested before approval for its effects on children's behaviour and learning ability.

To find out more information about 282 and other additives, visit The Food Intolerance Network of Australia. Read their fact sheet on 282.

Choice magazine has also tested breads and has its findings on which breads are healthiest.
